This week’s distraction
This week’s distraction is all these Korean words that have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. The “definitive record of the English language” included words alluding to the global popularity of the country’s music and cuisine, plus one or two with roots in the Korean language may be less obvious.
The K- prefix is prominently featured, as you might expect given that so many people outside of South Korea now listen to K-pop – which was added to the OED in 2016 – watch K-dramas or use K-beauty products.
The new words include hallyu - the Korean original for the wave of pop culture that has made BTS one of the world’s most popular bands and Squid Game the Netflix sensation of 2021. Read more in the Guardian here
This week Madhvi has been reading
Short, funny, smart essays and absurdities inspired by life. We love Fran, and even did a whole episode about her which you can listen to here if you haven’t already.
This week Rina has been reading
This week Rina has been reading “Feminist City” by Leslie Kern! My mind is already blown by some of the obvious things she is saying that I never considered, WOW!
This week’s inspiration
This week’s inspiration is Yasmine. C M’Barek. Yasmine is a German journalist and following her on Instagram was the best thing we have ever done! She does a great job of breaking down politics in a smart but understandable way. Follow her, it will make you feel smart! Read her work on Zeit online. Follow her on Twitter here.
