This week’s distraction
This week’s distraction is the 6th African Book Festival, coming to Berlin in June.
This year, the festival takes place from June 28th to 30th as a Queer Edition, focusing on African and Afro-diasporic authors from the LGBTQI+ community and showcasing literature in which homosexuality and queerness in Africa play a role.
As part of a three-day festival program consisting of readings, discussions, music, poetry performances and interactive, modern event formats, the audience will have the opportunity to experience stars and newcomers live and engage in conversation with them. The program is accompanied by a large outdoor market offering a variety of food, goods and, of course, plenty of books.
Get your special early bird 3-day festival pass at 30% off until 15th April!
This week Madhvi read
This week Madhvi read The Nursery by Szilvia Molnar, which follows a woman in her early days as a mother — I’m so interested in how we really experience things, rather than the sentimental stories we are given about motherhood from society. This book delivers an insightful picture.
And if you’re interested in bodies, writing, and reading, I still have one place left for my Erotic Writing Course starting on Sunday. Discover what stories your body has to tell with this unique combination of embodiment and writing exercises in an intimate, cosy circle of women. For questions or to grab the last place, message me: unleashcreativemagic@gmail.com!
This week Rina read
This week Rina read All About Love by bell hooks, the next book for our feminist book club. We don’t spend enough time thinking about love and how important it is in our lives, so this is an amazing reminder.
This week’s inspiration
This week’s inspiration Samrawit Fikru, an Ethiopian computer scientist, entrepreneur, and businesswoman.
She is the founder and CEO of Hybrid Designs, a software development company which produces the most popular ridesharing app in the country, RIDE! Fikru wanted to create a service to address the safety concerns felt by herself and others in trying to find a taxi, and developed RIDE to help address these gaps.
As of 2020, the app has tens of thousands of users and has been downloaded over 50,000 times. The development staff for the app is 90% female. Fikru aims to inspire other women with her work: "Women-owned businesses are growing in number; now we need more young girls to access the finances to make their creative ideas happen.
What a woman!
