This week’s distraction
This week’s distraction is that the Government of the United States of America has sold off the power grids of Puerto Rico to a private company. Yes, you heard that right: Power grids in Puerto Rico are being privatised. Not only is Puerto Rico a colony of the United States, officially called an ‘unincorporated territory’, but Puerto Ricans who live under the rule of the United States don’t get to vote or take part in any political decisions. Can you say colony? On top of this their power system, which is already frail and prone to blackouts, has now been sold off. Read more in AP News here.
This week Madhvi has been reading
This week Madhvi has been reading Whore of New York by Liara Roux. It’s a really easy and fascinating read which covers a bunch of subjects, from feminism to autism.
This week Rina has been reading
This week Rina has been reading Kim Ji-Young born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo. This book follows the story of the life of Kim Ji-Young including a short family history, her childhood and adult life. It’s heartbreaking and compelling, but also short and easy to read! Highly recommend.
This week’s inspiration
This week’s inspiration is the Whore of New York herself; Liara Roux.
Liara is an American writer, sex worker, indie porn director and human rights activist with a strong following online. She has written for Vice Media and HuffPost. Her first novel, Whore of New York: A Confession, is out now.
