This week’s distraction
This week’s distraction is the election in Uganda. President Yoweri Museveni has been in power for the last 35 years. On January 14th, 2021 Uganda held a general election with opposition leader Bobi Wine winning 35% of the votes. Since then Bobi has been hiding in his house fearing for his life. Just before the election, the government shut down the internet in the country. The lead up to the election has been marked by violence and accusations of corruption. Read more on the BBC here and read up on Yoweri Museveni grip on power here.
This week Madhvi has been reading
This week Madhvi has been reading composer Philip Glass’s memoir Words Without Music. He started composing music because he was pondering the question “Where does music come from?” A question he still hasn’t found the answer to. Glass was born in 1937, and offers a fascinating insight into what life was like for his generation — going to Paris by boat, and entering a life in the arts. It also references tons of musicians and composers that I’m writing down and listening to as I go. If you want to listen to some of Glass’s compositions, I’d recommend his collaborations with Ravi Shankar. Glass spent a lot of time in India learning from Ravi Shankar and other Indian musicians, and his compositions that came out of this time are some of my favourite.
This week Rina has been watching
This week Rina has almost finished Netflix’s Lupin. As we can’t travel right now and life seems to be stalling a little, this suave, action-packed series was the perfect remedy for the corona winter blues.
